South Carolina Governor’s Mansion & Capitol Building December 11, 2024 Featured
PRICE:
$135.00 per person
Just in time for Christmas! The South Carolina Garden Club has been busy at work decorating the Governor’s Mansion. Located on “Arsenal Hill” in Columbia, it is the official residence of the Governor of South Carolina. Built in 1855, it has undergone a 5.8 million dollar restoration. Today we are able to see rare treasures from our states history. The Palmetto Dining Room features a 1912 reissue of 19th century French block print wallpaper by Zuber called “Views of North America”. There are two pastel portraits in the front parlor, by the first woman artist in America (1708), Henrietta Johnson. There is a sword from the Spanish American War and so many other treasures that we will see!
After lunch, we will visit the South Carolina Capitol, which is called one of the most notable buildings in the nation. Construction began in 1855. As we tour this magnificent State House, you will be impressed by its outstanding architecture, historical paintings and fascinating history. This 22 acre complex features more than 30 monuments. Don’t forget to look for the Bronze Stars which mark the spots of Civil War cannon ball attacks around the Capitol!
