On the night of February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley sank the Union ship USS Housatonic near the Charleston harbor. The fate of the Hunley remained a mystery for more than a century until it was found in May 1995 by author Clive Cussler. The History Channel did a full show on the Hunley which included the DNA testing on bodies discovered inside.
After lunch you will be thrilled as we visit Magnolia Cemetery! It is the resting place of all three crews from the Hunley, also known as the last great Confederate Funeral. Magnolia is a treasure trove of Charleston’s elite.
Come with us and experience this place of magnificent monuments! You'll be entranced with the sheer splendor of overwhelming emotions as you learn about symbolism incorporated in the architectural design of the monuments as well as getting to know the people who rest there.
