Sunday, Dec. 6 This morning we head to Washington D.C. by luxury motorcoach. We will stop for breaks every two hours. Lunch is included at the Cracker Barrel. Dinner is on your own.
Monday, Dec. 7 This morning we head over to the White House Visitors Center. Here we can view over 90 artifacts from the White House Collections, and explore the White House through their touchscreen tour. Our lunch cruise down the Potomac River will include monumental views of Washington, DC. On board we will experience all the sights, sounds, and flavors of the season, with Christmas music and a holiday menu. In the afternoon we will visit the National Botanical Gardens. More than 200 years ago George Washington had a vision for a National Botanic Garden. Established by Congress in 1820, the United States Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanic gardens in North America! Here we will explore the Conservatory which contains hundreds of plants, many rare and endangered.
Tuesday, Dec. 8 This morning we visit the National Cathedral. Officially this is a non-denominational National House of Prayer. It is the sixth largest Cathedral in the world and second largest in the U.S., constructed in 1904. Here we will see amazing architecture that includes 19 chapels, and brilliant stained glass windows! Over 200 people are buried here including Helen Keller. For lunch we will go to the Old Baptistery Building, one of the oldest buildings still in use. After lunch we have a special treat! Always looking for the unique spot and I have found it!
The Cereal Heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post bought Hillwood Estate in 1955 and soon decided to share her home to inspire and educate the public. We will see the most comprehensive collection of Russian Imperial art outside of the country! Over twenty-five acres of landscaped gardens and natural woodlands for us all to explore. The massive greenhouse has over 2,000 specimens of orchids. If you want to rest and have a snack, you can visit the Merriweather Café for coffee or desert. From the captivating life of Marjorie Post to the exquisitely maintained mansion and gardens, the experience of Hillwood estate outshines even the Faberge’ Eggs! After this active day we will return to the hotel and dinner is on your own.
Wednesday, Dec. 9 After breakfast, we board the coach and head over to Arlington National Cemetery. This cemetery was established during the Civil War on the estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s wife, Mary Ann Custis Lee (Great Granddaughter of Martha Washington). Here we visit 600 acres of hallowed ground. This is an enduring tribute to those who’ve dedicated their lives defending our nation. We will visit John F. Kennedy’s grave, the Memorial Amphitheater, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, graves of Presidents, Supreme Court Judges, foreign nationals and other political figures. After spending 2 hours there we head home, arriving around 8:00 pm.
